  • Public Safety and Prison Reform

Perhaps the most fundamental tension in a free society is presented by the simple question; how safe is safe enough?

The answers unfortunately are far more complex than the question.

Most public discussion of public safety occurs in the aftermath of tragedy. As a result, no issue is subject to more emotion. The consequences of failure are profound.

  • Unfunded Mandates

All state and local governments must deal with the consequences of unfunded and underfunded federal mandates. However, these impacts are not evenly felt around the country. This is because some program obligations have greater consequences in some states and because the federal government does not provide the same level of funding to each state for all mandates.

  • Open Primary Initiative

The Open Primary proposal will appear on the June, 2010 ballot. If approved by voters it would change the way elections are conducted for partisan offices in California.

  • The Alternative Minimum Income Tax

The AMT “Stealth Tax”.  If you don’t know what the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) is, you should find out, because you may be paying it and not even know it.

  • California Campaign Finance Reform
Current System. Current campaign finance rules are a complicated set of limits on maximum campaign contributions based upon the office sought and the nature of the contributor. These limits are adjusted periodically to reflect increased costs in campaigning.
